What Do Carpenter Ants Do to Your Home?
The carpenter ant is a large ant and measures about half an inch long when they are fully grown. They are most often black in color although there are some that have a little bit of yellow as well. If you come across one of the workers that are out and about each day they will have large mandibles. These ants are found most often in wood where they will tunnel through to make a home. They don’t feed on the wood but will chew it away to make room for their nest and colony. Even though they prefer to live in damp moist wood they will come in the house in search of food. They will feed on just about anything but especially sugary foods. There is a swarmer group in the colony that has wings and will swarm in search of food and shelter. If you see winged ants it means that the colony is well set and will not move on unless given a reason such as professional pest control with A Five Star Termite & Pest Control.
What Happens if You Get Bitten By a Fire Ant?
This is ant is quite a bit smaller than the carpenter ant and the adults come in at about a quarter of an inch. They are usually red in color and have some black on the back. They are fairly aggressive and will swarm onto something that gets in their path including a person that gets in the middle of their work. They also live in a huge colony size that can reach each up to 250,000 workers. They are not oppose to eating anything that includes meat, sweets and anything greasy. You might notice a mound of sandy dirt near you home and that is where the colony enters their nest and series of tunnels.
Why Do Pavement Ants Come Inside?
The pavement ant is about the same size as the red carpenter ant. They are usually brown or tan in color and they have lines running down their back. The name would suggest that they are found out on the pavement. That holds some truth because they nest under concrete and in the cracks of the sidewalk. They will go long distances in search of food which includes buildings and homes. They are probably the most common ant to find walking around on your kitchen counters.
