What Attracts Rats to My House & How Do I Get Rid of Rodent Infestations Fast in Marion, TX?

Dealing with pests of any kind is a real problem. Many people have a fear of the pests while others don’t appreciate the damage they cause and/or just find them disgusting filth spreaders. The fact that many of them carry disease and spread bacteria only adds to the need to have pests removed from your home. Small pests are hard to deal with but when you have a large pest they can be scary. Rats are one of those pests that when you see them around your home make you want to hide for cover. They are much larger than a mouse and can do quite a bit of damage. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control outlines what to watch out for and what you can do when you see rats in your home.

What are the Most Common Species of Rats?

The two most common rats that are found in the area are Norway Rats and Roof Rats. If you think that you are seeing a Norway rat around your home there are some characteristics to tell them apart from other rats. They have a blunt nose rather than a pointy nose and will have very course hair that is shaggy. They can reach a length of nine inches that does not include the tail. The tail then adds about eight inches to the full length. You may see grease marks along their most common traveling paths. The roof rat is a bit smaller with the adult body reaching about eight inches although the tail will add about another 10 inches in length. They have smooth hair that is often brown and their noses are pointy unlike the Norway rat. The presence of a rat is the same no matter which species you are dealing with. They are both a problem because of the bacteria and other health related issues that they spread. It is best to have them dealt with immediately.

How to Get Rid of Rats

The normal pest control treatments that are used for every day pests such as cockroaches, ants and spiders does not work on rodents. They are tricky and can be elusive. They may not ever run across the line of pest control treatment that is set when your home is treated which is why they are often considered a specialty pest. There are several methods of treating for rats, one being the use of bait. They can’t pass up a free meal so this usually works great. You can also use a plethora of traps to catch them one by one. The traps are better if you are concerned about where the rat may go to die. The problem is that the traps have to be cleared and that is why the treatment is best left to a professional with expertise in treating for rats.

What Will Keep Rats Away?

Rats are an opportunist. They want to come in a place because there is a spot top nest and a great place to grab a bite to eat. Your food storage is a great spot so keeping a clean kitchen and your food packed away correctly is a great way to keep them from stopping by.
