Have you been spend lots of time outdoors? When the weather is nice out the best way to spend the day is outside enjoying your time with friends and family. The problem is that we are not the only ones that enjoy the nice weather. We are often times left to share the space with the dreaded mosquito. Mosquitoes are known to swarm around areas that have a water source close by. They also have disease and viruses that they carry that can be harmful to people. Mosquitoes don’t need a lot of water so if you have a small leak in your hose that can pool up and be just enough for them to thrive. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control spotlight the four main dangerous mosquito borne diseases that have been detected in Texas so you can understand the importance of keeping them away from your loved ones.
Zika Virus
One of the newer viruses that have been linked to the bite of mosquitos is the Zika Virus. This is a terrible virus and has some very serious repercussions. The virus started in Brazil but has reached the shores of the United States and inland to Texas. The virus has ill effects for soon to be mothers causing birth defects such has hydrocephaly which is a small head. The virus has some symptoms such as fever, red eyes, rash and joint pain which are similar to many other common illnesses such as the common cold.
West Nile Virus
This is a disease that is transmitted to people and animals through a bite from an infected mosquito. The disease is found primarily near the West Nile River but has been found in the United States and can still be found in areas across the US including Texas. The disease can cause no symptoms at all or can come across like the flu. Many people are unaware that they have been infected.
Chikungunya Virus
Chikungunya virus is spread to people via the bite of an infected mosquito. The most common symptoms of infection are fever and joint pain while other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling or rash. Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In late 2013, chikungunya virus was found for the first time in the Americas. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat chikungunya virus infection.
Dengue
Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (the same species of mosquito that can also spread Zika and chikungunya viruses). Because there are four dengue viruses, a person can be infected with a dengue virus up to four times. Second dengue infections can be more dangerous and require hospitalization. However, any dengue infection can cause severe illness. Dengue is common in more than 100 countries around the world.
Other Viruses Spread By Mosquitoes
There are several other viruses and diseases that can be caused by a bite from a mosquito such as Yellow Fever and Malaria. These viruses cause health concerns and have been found around the world. The Yellow Fever has a vaccination that is the best way to keep it under control. The other viruses are best controlled when the mosquito population is controlled around your area.
