Mosquitoes are an insect that is not only irritating, but it can also be dangerous. They are carriers of several diseases that can have a large impact on your overall health. Some of the diseases that mosquitoes carry can have lasting health effects that will compromise your quality of life. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control is here to talk about some of the most common diseases that come from mosquitoes and the symptoms that they carry.
West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus is a tricky one to diagnose. Some people that are infected with this virus will experience no symptoms at all. 1 in 5 people will experience a fever and aches and pains though. There are also some people that will experience serious effects that come from the disease. It can cause brain swelling and meningitis in severe cases.
Encephalitis
Whenever you experience swelling on your brain or spinal cord, it is known as encephalitis. Mosquitoes carry several diseases that can cause this. West Nile is one of them. This can cause serious problems including seizures, muscle weakness and even brain damage when it isn’t treated.
Zika Virus
While this illness has been around since the 1940s, we haven’t dealt with it much in the U.S. until recently. Many people that have Zika, don’t realize that they have it. Usually, the symptoms are mild and include muscle aches, slight fever and joint pain that resolves within a week. When you have a severe case of Zika or are pregnant, the symptoms can be more severe including a birth defect known as microcephaly and Guillian-Barre which is a nervous system disorder that will resolve itself over time.
Dengue Fever
This disease is a miserable one. You will have a sudden high fever and could experience bleeding from your nose and gums. While you may feel like you are knocking on death’s doorstep, the only that you can do to treate dengue fever is to give it time and rest. This is a disease that is usually contracted outside of the U.S.
Chikungunya Virus
This is a disease that wasn’t a problem in the U.S. until recently. It is painful as you have severe joint aches that will plague you for several weeks before they go away. Drinking a good amount of fluid and allowing your body the rest it needs will be the best way to fight the disease. Over the counter pain relievers will be helpful too.
