There is nothing worse than going to prepare a meal, and finding your kitchen crawling with ants. This is even worse if you have guests over, and they see these pests crawling around your kitchen. You may not realize this, but you have items around your kitchen that can help get rid of ants. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control is here to share these simple tips to help you avoid an ant infested kitchen.
Vinegar Ant Prevention
Vinegar is a great cleaner to use for general cleaning around your home, and it can also aid in keeping ants away from your kitchen. Ants follow a scent trail when looking for food. They don’t like the smell of vinegar and will avoid it. So clean your kitchen with a vinegar and water solution to keep them away.
Peppermint Essential Oil Ant Repellent
Peppermint oil is also helpful in destroying an ant’s scent trail. They don’t like the smell of peppermint oil either. After washing your kitchen counters, put a few drops of peppermint oil on your rag and wipe them again. Not only do ants not like it, but you can have a very fresh smelling kitchen when you are done.
Prevent Ants with Lemon Juice
This is also a scent that ants don’t like. Spray a lemon juice and water mixture at possible entry points for ants. If you see them concentrated in one area, douse it with this spray and they won’t come back.
Coffee Grounds Repel Ants
Because of the strong smell of coffee grounds, this is a great resource on the outside of your home. If you notice an ant trail anywhere on the exterior of your home, sprinkle coffee grounds around that area and you should solve the problem.
Dish Soap Kills Ants Instantly
Dish soap is a great ant killer. Apply a thin line around the baseboards of your kitchen, or near any cracks that you see ants are climbing in and out of to keep them away. You can use dish soap on their mounds as well; just pour it right in the opening to kill them. Just keep in mind this only kills the ants that come in direct contact with the dish soap and not the ants hiding in places you can’t see.
Ants Coming in Through Window Frame or Around Back Door? Seal Around Them!
You may notice that the caulking around the doors and windows of your home is starting to crack and not work as well as it should. Replacing the caulking around these parts of your home can help keep ants from finding their way into your house.
Trim Landscaping to Avoid Ants in Your Yard
If you have landscaping around the exterior of your home, keep bushes and trees trimmed at least 12-15 inches away from your home. Ants crawl all over the branches of trees and shrubs and if they are touching your house, it can be one of the ways they get into your home.
