As you spend time outdoors this spring and summer, you may find yourself face to face with all sorts of different insects. Bug bites are inevitably going to occur. Here at A Five Star Termite & Pest Control we want to make sure that you know what you can do to prevent and treat bug bites.
How Do I Stop Getting Bitten?
We are going to start with what you can do to prevent bug bites. One of the very best things that you can do to prevent bug bites is use insect repellant. There are many different insect repellants on the market for you to choose from. You will want to purchase one that contains 20-30% DEET. If you are going to be putting on sunscreen and insect repellant you will want to start with the sunscreen first. After your sunscreen has dried apply your insect repellant according to the instructions on the insect repellant. Insect repellant cannot prevent all types of bug bites. It does prevent bites from mosquitoes, biting flies, gnats, chiggers, ticks, and fleas. Even the best insect repellant cannot help prevent bites from bees, wasps, hornets, or spiders. If you are going to an area that you know if infested with insects that you cannot prevent getting bitten from you will want to cancel your plans to keep yourself safe. You will also want to wear appropriate clothing to help prevent bug bites. If you are going to be outside at night or hiking, try to cover as much of your skin as possible. We recommend wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, socks, and closed toed shoes when you are going to be hiking or out in the mountains for an extended period of time.
What Gets Rid of Bug Bites Fast?
If you do get bit by a bug there are a few things that you will want to do if the bite is bothering you. If you were stung by something that left the stinger inside of you it is necessary to remove the stinger. Then you will want to clean the area with mild soap and water. A cold compress or over-the-counter cortisone cream can both help relieve the symptoms of bug bites and stings. When you use a cold compress you will want to leave the ice on for 10 minutes, take it off for 10 minutes, and repeat. Sometimes these do not provide relief from the pain. You can also take a pain reliever to help with the pain. If you are feeling extreme pain you will want to go see a doctor. You will also want to see a doctor if your bite is infected or if you believe that you are having an allergic reaction.
