Having your home filled with flies can be more than anyone can handle. Nobody wants to have flies buzzing around their heads at all times of the day and night. There are several fly species and each of them require a little different control method. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control is here to share some tips to help you control any fly populations that you may have in your home this summer.
Sanitation is Key to Control the Population of Flies
The best way to control any fly population you have in your home is to eliminate their food source. Without a food source, they will quickly die and the problem is then solved. Not all flies eat the same diet, therefore, you need to figure out what you need to eliminate in order to control them. Here are some common flies found in OH and how to control and get rid of them.
• Fruit Flies– When you have a fruit fly problem you need to completely cover any fruit in your home until the adult flies die. If you are discarding any fruit, it needs to be disposed of outside to avoid an even bigger problem in your home.
• House Flies & Blow Flies– These common flies are usually found breeding in moist garbage. Properly disposing of waste is one of the first steps in controlling these flies. Because they breed and feed off of garbage, it is important that the trash in your home be removed often to avoid an infestation.
• Moth Flies & Drain Flies– These flies are usually found in plumbing. Sometimes, the pipes in your plumbing is coated in bacteria that these flies consume. There are several over the counter drain cleaners that can help get rid of this problem. Once that bacteria is removed, you shouldn’t have any more problems with moth flies or drain flies.
• Fungus Gnats– These flies are found lingering around household plants. They are attracted to the excess moisture that accumulates in indoor plants. The key to avoiding a problem with these gnats is to allow the soil your indoor plants are planted in to completely dry between watering. This will keep them from breeding in the soil.
Seal Your Home to Protect it from Flies
Another key in controlling fly populations is to seal your home and get rid of any entry points where they can gain entry to your home. You should check all of your screens to ensure there are no holes or tears in them as well as check the windows for any caulking that need replacing.
