Cockroaches can be found all over America as well as all over the world. Cockroaches are an adaptive species that have roamed the earth for millions of years. There are a known 4,000 species of cockroaches but only 30 species are known to inhabit human domains and urban environments. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control will share some of the most common species found invading homes and commercial buildings and how identifying the right species can help aid in controlling them.
American Cockroach
The American cockroach is one of the largest species to invade homes. They are able to reach up to 2 inches in length. The American cockroach is a light golden brown color and has wings which they do use to fly with. However, they are not the most graceful of fliers and only fly short distances. The American cockroach is often identified by the sideways figure “8” marking on their head.
German Cockroach
The German cockroach is a medium sized species. They only reach up to 5/8 on an inch in length. German cockroaches are tan bronze in color and are identified using the markings on their head which look like two black racing stripes going down the head and back. They too have a long pair of wings that cover the abdomen but are not fully developed, which means they don’t fly. Both American and German cockroaches have a diverse diet and will feed on anything, but both focus on cellulose. They will also feed on decaying plant matter and paper.
Spotted Mediterranean Cockroach
Other species of cockroaches will invade homes throughout Texas. However, many are considered more of an occasional invader. One species that can be seen invading homes is the Spotted Mediterranean Cockroach, which is a small species only reaching 1/3 on an inch in length. They are light tan in color with black sprinkles that cover their body. The adults will develop wings that cover their body while the nymphs are wingless. Nonetheless, you can still see their spots. Spotted Mediterranean cockroaches don’t often invade homes but will occasionally because they are drawn to light and will come toward homes at night.
Oriental Cockroach
Another occasional invader is the Oriental cockroach which is a water loving species which gave it the nickname of the water bug. Oriental cockroaches are average sized, reaching up to 1 ¼ inches long. They are most often solid black beside the nymphs which are two tone red and black. They love to rummage through sewer and drainage systems and typically enter the home either due to recent flooding or by accident.
