Unfortunately, it’s not just overnight guests that can bring bed bugs into your home on their luggage. Any guest that just stops by for a chat over coffee may have brought extra company and left them behind without even knowing it. Not to mention bed bugs being bought into your home on used furniture and other furnishings. Bed bugs are notorious hitchhikers. They find their way into people’s homes all year round. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control will share obvious signs of Bed Bug activity and how you can treat your home for bed bugs.
Waking Up to Small Itch Bumps
The first big clue of a bed bug infestation is the constant waking up to itchy bug bites. Sometimes you may even have a cluster or even a straight row of bug bites on your skin. If you have found that you or your family continues to suffer from constant bug bites, it’s time to check the sheets. Bed bugs are flat and small, ranging from the size of an apple seed or smaller. They are reddish brown in color with the larva or young Bed Bugs being transparent to a white creamy color.
How Do You Check a Bed for Bed Bugs?
Begin a visual search of all bed sheets. If you see reddish brown spots, this is a sign of bed bugs. Remove all bedding and check the mattress and box springs from any clusters of Bed Bugs. They like to hide in dark places during the day and come out at night to suck on the blood of sleeping hosts. Check in cracks and crevices of the entire bed, including the bed frame. If you haven’t seen any signs of bed bugs on or around the bed, start checking in base boards and door frames as well as other furniture in the room. Bed bugs will travel up to eight feet a night to feed. They prefer wood or cloth furniture to hide in during the day. Begin your search with those types of furniture. Keep in mind your living room may also have bed bugs. Any time a host will sit around long enough to feed on, the area will serve as a decent environment for bed bugs. Couch potatoes will serve as a perfect host especially those late night viewers.
How Do You Get Rid of Bed Bugs & Keep Away?
Treatments do vary but the most effective methods are done by the professionals. Bed bugs can’t survive in high temperatures. Professionals will use a special heating machine to cleanse your home by exposing it to extreme heat. There are of course measures the home owner can take as well. Wash bedding weekly with hot water. Drying with high heat will kill any bed bug or egg that may be on the bedding. Vacuuming mattresses also helps remove any unseen bed bugs or their eggs. Regular cleaning will help remove and keep Bed Bug population down. Also vacuum your floors and use your vacuum hose to suck around base boards and door frames to remove any hiding bed bugs. Clean, less cluttered homes have less bed bug problems than those with the mess. By removing places for bed bugs to hide and regular cleaning of your home will greatly reduce the bed bugs infesting your home.
