Home Sealing & Yard Cleanup Spring Pest Exclusion to Keep Pests Away in Hollywood Park, TX

As of March 20th, spring will have officially arrived and with it comes more pests. There are a number of pests that are fully active such as termites, bees, wasps, spiders, ants, and cockroaches. There will also be more activity from birds, squirrels and other local wildlife. With so many active pests to worry about, it is essential that homeowners take control of their home now to prevent spring pest invasions. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control will share what you can do to prepare for spring pests with proper pest exclusion.

Yard Cleanup to Keep Bugs & Pests Away

All pests love debris to hide in. Yard waste or simple clutter around the yard makes for perfect habitats. One of the first steps to pest exclusion is to begin cleaning up the yard. Remove all yard debris and clear away the clutter. If you have items in your yard you need to keep, make sure they are stored away from the house. This will also include firewood. Along with cleaning the yard, trim tree branches, at least those that are making contact with the house. Remove any dead trees in your yard, including the stumps to prevent carpenter ants and termites. Trim the bushes and shrubs. Make sure there is at least a six inch clearing from off the ground to help reduce scorpions, cockroaches, spiders and local wildlife.

Bug & Pest Proof Your House

On the outside of the home you will want to make sure it is pest proof. Start by inspecting your windows. Make sure the window screens are securely in place and have no holes or cuts. Check around the window frames for any gaps or cracks. Use silicone caulking glue to fill in any gaps you find. Inspect the door frames as well. Make sure the door weatherstripping is still functioning. Go inside the home and look at your doors. If there is any daylight shining around the edges you will need to replace your weatherstripping. Inspect siding and the foundation of the home for cracks or gaps and fill them in as well. Next, protect your home ventilation features such as chimneys, attic ventilation, and dryer vents by placing a screen like material to prevent pests from entering these ventilation points. Make sure the material still allows proper ventilation.

Dog & Cat Food Attracts Roaches & Other Pests

Next you will want to avoid feeding or providing water to pests. Bird baths and wild bird feeders are discouraged as they will also feed and water unwanted pests. However, for those who like these features in their yard, make sure they are put out of reach of pests. Avoid leaving pet food or water dishes outside unless your pet is outside. When your pet is indoors bring in their food and water. Inside the home avoid leaving snacks on the countertops. Additionally, make sure pantry goods are stored in glass, metal or thick plastic containers that is airtight. Cleaning up crumbs and dirt immediately greatly helps to prevent rodents, cockroaches and ants in the home.
