There are thousands of people throughout our country that love to spend time gardening every week. Gardening is a way to provide your family with delicious fruits, vegetables and herbs to enjoy. It also provides many different health benefits. Gardening is known to relieve stress, improve your heart health, increase your hand strength and dexterity, improve your brain health, and decrease depression and other mental health problems. With all of the benefits of gardening many people try their hand at gardening each year. One thing that can make gardening hard is different insects that destroy your garden. Insects can get in your garden and wreak all sorts of havoc on all of your hard work. A Five Star Termite & Pest Control has put together a list of common insects that cause destruction in your garden along with some tips of how to get rid of them so that your garden can grow.
How to Get Rid of Aphids on Roses, Succulents & More
Aphids are tiny, pear-shaped critters with long antennae. They are typically light green or yellow in color but some species are different colors. When you have aphids you never have just one. They are group insects that like to feed in families. In addition to feeding in families they reproduce extremely quickly. Most females are actually born pregnant. Aphids will suck plant sap which then causes leaves to distort and drop off of your plant. They can stunt the growth of your plants and deform your fruits and vegetables quickly. If you find aphids in your garden you will use insecticidal soap or neem oil to help get rid of them. Use the soap or oil to spray the top and underside of your plants. You will need to do this every day until they are gone.
How to Remove Cabbage Looper Worms
Cabbage loopers common name is inch worm. Cabbage loopers are the light green caterpillars of the white cabbage moth. They got the name cabbage loopers because of the way that they double up or “loop” up as they move. They typically stick to eating crops that are in the cabbage family. Cabbage loopers will tunnel in roots which kills the plant directly. If you see small holes in the leaves of your plants in the cabbage family you probably have cabbage loopers in your garden. Many gardeners will try using neem oil spray on them but it does not actually get rid of them. Neem oil spray only slows down their growth and reduces reproduction. If you want to avoid having cabbage loopers you will want to practice excellent garden maintenance. Make sure that you pull up any remains from your crops at the end of the season so that young cabbage loopers do not overwinter in your garden. It is also recommended that you put row covers on your plants during the growing season.
How to Get Rid of Beetles in the Garden
There are many different species of beetles that can cause problems in your garden. Colorado potato beetles; Mexican bean beetles; flea beetles; and Japanese beetles can all get into your garden and make it hard for you to successfully get a crop that season. The different types of beetles vary in their severity depending on where you live. All of them will kill the young plants in your garden and make it impossible for anything to grow. If you have any types of beetles in your garden it is recommended that you apply floating row covers. Depending on the species you will want to use a spray of some sort to help get rid of them. Some do best with neem oil or insecticidal soap while other species do best with garlic spray. You will want to identify what type of beetle you are dealing with before deciding what spray to use on them.
