Everyone thinks cockroaches are creepy, but are cockroaches dangerous? A Five Star Termite & Pest Control outlines why roaches are indeed harmful to your health!

Cockroaches Carry Diseases

Cockroaches are known to carry at least 30 different types of bacteria. Some of these include dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera and bacteria that causes diarrhea. Just breathing the air around and cockroach infestation is enough to inhale the bacteria they carry. If you’re not feeling well, you may be dealing with a cockroach infestation.

Cockroach Allergy & Asthma Health Problems

On top of the diseases that cockroaches can carry they can also make conditions worse for people that deal with allergies and asthma. Cockroaches carry allergens that can make symptoms of asthma worse and their saliva can lead to skin rashes. These problems can become worse for the young and the elderly. The members of your family will breathe easier when you eliminate an infestation.

Cockroaches Bite

Cockroaches will eat almost anything. The CDC reports that cockroaches don’t bite but because they will eat just about anything, they might just take a nibble on you. Good news is that they are not venomous, and a bite is not likely to be a serious problem. As with any insect bite you will need to keep it clean and look for symptoms that may need medical attention.

Roaches are Dirty

Cockroaches are extremely dirty. In fact, they love to hang out in the dirtiest of places, like sewers and dumpsters where spoiled food and feces can be found. Cockroaches carry dirt, bacteria and other contaminates on their legs and body and then across the surfaces in your home. Keeping your home clean is the best way to keep cockroaches away. Don’t keep dirty dishes laying around, take the trash on regularly and wipe down surfaces and floors with a cleaning solution to keep cockroaches away. The cleaner your home is the better. You can keep cockroaches even further away from your home by making sure outdoor areas are free of trash and animal feces.

Roaches Can Poison Your Food

Not only do cockroaches leave a trail of unsanitary conditions, they can poison your food. An open box of cereal is very welcoming to cockroaches. They will leave their feces behind and if you then consume that cereal you can become sick. They don’t even have to defecate in your food, cockroaches need only touch your food to make you sick. Keep food tightly sealed and throw away any food that is old or rotting. Keep your food safe by making sure cockroaches can’t get at it.

Cockroaches Reproduce Quickly

If you see one cockroach, there are many others. Cockroaches may only live for a couple of months, but they breed at an alarming rate. One female cockroach can lay hundreds of eggs during her life! The longer it takes you to deal with an infestation the larger it will become.
